Born in Raritan, New Jersey, in 1932, Zaninelli was educated at the Curtis Institute of Music where he taught following his graduation. He moved to Italy in 1964 to compose film music and was appointed Composer-in-Residence at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1968.
